The club presents awards in five categories. Qualifying races run from 1 January to 31 December, and winners are presented at the annual prizegiving dinner in February.
Past winners: championship and club records · most improved · memorial awards · challenge trophy
Club championship
A league with promotion and relegation, in separate men’s and women’s divisions. See the club championship page for how it works.
- Enter races as Bishop’s Stortford Running Club, ideally in club colours.
- Points for your finishing position among members in each race under 20 miles, plus points for your best marathon and best 20 mile times.
- Your six best performances count.
- Usually the top two in each division go up and the bottom two go down.
Endurance challenge
For members who take on longer races (previously called the Challenge Trophy). Separate men’s and women’s awards in each age category.
| Category | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Open | 18+ | 18+ |
| Veteran | 40–49 | 35–44 |
| Super-vet | 50–59 | 45–54 |
| Vintage | 60–69 | 55–64 |
| Super-vintage | 70+ | 65+ |
To qualify, run two 5 mile or 10K races, two 10 mile races and two half marathons. Any race counts, including championship races, so with careful planning six or seven races can qualify you for both awards.
- Open category: you must also complete one race of 15 miles or more, and the overall winner isn’t eligible for an age-category award.
- Super-vintage: one race in each distance is enough.
Winners keep a trophy for the year plus a shield to keep.
Most improved runner
For the biggest improvement on the previous year, using official chip times. Age categories as above, plus a Senior category (men under 40, women under 35) — there’s no open category.
You need to improve in at least three of: 5K, 5 mile, 10K, 10 mile, half marathon, 20 mile and marathon. The winner has the highest total percentage improvement across their best three.
Triathlon and multisport
- Triathlon performance awards — men’s and women’s, based on your four best triathlons of the season, scored using British Triathlon’s age-group method (compared with the 40th-percentile finisher in your age group), so courses and ages are comparable.
- Multisport achievement award — for performance or achievement in any multisport event.
- In the Spirit award — for contribution or endeavour in multisport.
Special awards
Any member can nominate another. The committee, team captains and coaches decide.
Memorial awards
- Bryan Mowles Award — the most outstanding veteran or older member, for athletic effort.
- Tony Pitman Award — for contribution to the spirit of the club, usually socially rather than athletically.
- Tom Cooke Award — for athletic endeavour, usually by a younger member.
- Claire’s Cup — for a female member who has run, socialised and contributed, persevering against the odds while still enjoying it.
- Jo Arscott Award — for the member who best embodies the spirit of cross country.
Other awards
- Team Tim Award — for an outstanding marathon, finishing one despite adversity, or an uplifting marathon story.
- Coaches Cup — for contribution to club coaching.
- Wooden Spoon — for the most amusing running mishap of the year.
Trophies
Returned at the end of the year: special awards, the overall men’s and women’s champions, and the endurance challenge winners.
Yours to keep: all annual trophy winners (except the Wooden Spoon), each championship division winner, endurance challenge runners-up, and anyone who breaks a club age-category record at 5 miles, 10K, 10 miles, half marathon, 15 miles, 20 miles or marathon.
